The first meeting of Drafting Group for Myanmar’s Summary of Information on Safeguards

The very first meeting of Drafting Group (DG) for Myanmar’s Summary of Information (SOI) on Safeguards was held at UNDP office Nay Pyi Taw to support the preparation of the Summary. The meeting was conducted aiming for establishing the Drafting Group and introducing key knowledge on Summary of Information. In addition, it was intended to discuss the proposed workplan and an initial draft table of contents for the Summary. Drafting group is made up of representatives from key government departments and civil society organizations.

 

At the opening of the meeting, Mr. Timothy Boyle, Chief Technical Advisor of UN-REDD gave welcome message. He said, “This is the very first important meeting of drafting group. The goal is to produce Myanmar First Summary of Information (SOI). And we actually need a lot to do from now on. This is the requirement for a country if they want to access the result- based payment. Many countries have prepared initial SOI and submitted it before they applied for result-based payment. So this is a good chance for us to learn their experience and produce Myanmar’s SOI.”

 

After it, Daw May Nwe Soe, National Consultant who will lead the writing of the Summary was introduced to DG’s members. And She explained the overview of the objectives and agenda of the meeting. And then, Ms. Charlotte Hicks, Technical Officer of UN-Environment presented the introduction to Summaries of Information on Safeguards. In the presentation, she highlighted and shared experiences and examples of other countries which have submitted SOI successfully to UNFCCC.

 

Daw May Nwe Soe, National Consultant discussed about role and responsibilities of DG and then she asked for the suggestions and feedbacks of DG’s members. Ms. Charlotte Hicks, Technical Officer of UN-Environment gave presentation on proposed workplan for development of SoI and discussed about how to make it flexible within proposed time-frame. After it, she discussed with DG’s members on draft table of contents for SOI.

 

Total of 19 participants from government agencies (Department of Ethnic Rights, Union Attorney General office, Department of Social Welfare, Department of Agriculture and Forest Research Institute) and civil organizations (CHRO, Point, MERN and IP/EN Network) and UN agencies (UN Environment, and UN-REDD) were presented at the Drafting Group meeting of SOI.
