Preparation Meeting of Technical Working Group/Drivers and Strategy for a National Validation Workshop on Myanmar’s draft National REDD+ Strategy

UN-REDD PMU organized a preparation meeting of Technical Working Group (Drivers and Strategy) for National Validation Workshop on Myanmar’s draft National REDD+ Strategy at Amara Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw. 22 participants from government agencies, local CSOs and UN-REDD PMU team attended the whole day meeting. The meeting was intended to provide initial feedback on the Strategy and ideas proposals for the conduct of the National Validation Workshop.

 

At the opening of the meeting, Daw Khin Hnin Myint, Programme Coordinator of UN-REDD Myanmar Programme presented the process of developing the draft National REDD+ Strategy to give background and history of draft National REDD+ Strategy. She highlighted the seven sections that involved in daft National REDD+ Strategy and also explained about consultation process of Strategy Development.

 

Mr.Timothy Boyle, Chief Technical Advisor of UN-REDD Myanmar Programme gave presentation on vision, objectives and policies and measures of Draft National REDD+ Strategy focusing on high- level discussions on adoption of direct policy changes with the leadership of Forest Department. He encouraged Technical Working Group Members for advising on direct policy change in their sectors which can help achieve the objectives of the Strategy.

 

U Ngwe Thee, Deputy Director of Forest Department presented about Cancun Safeguards explaining on country safeguard approach and development of Safeguards Roadmap. He also clarified goals of Myanmar Safeguard approach, process to design Myanmar’s SIS and ongoing activities to finalize SIS in his presentation.

 

U Khine Zaw Wynn, National Coordinator of FAO gave presentation on Current Status of National Forest Monitoring System and Forest Reference Level of Myanmar by explaining current implementation process and results under National Forest Inventory and Forest Reference Level.

 

And then, Daw Khin Hnin Myint, Programme Coordinator of UN-REDD Myanmar Programme gave explanation on REDD+ Governance and Finance. She also clarified institutional arrangements for coordinating and reporting actions on REDD+, as part of the National REDD+ Strategy. After it, the participants discussed in groups on improvement to National REDD+ Strategy and gave feedback and recommendations. They also gave suggestions on organizing National Validation Workshop which will be conducted on 10-11 September 2019.
