In support of Myanmar’s National REDD+ Strategy Development, UN-REDD programme held Ministerial Meeting in close collaborating with MoNREC (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation) in Nay Pyi Taw on 9 June 2017. 14 senior officials from respective departments under MoNREC attended the meeting.
The aim of the meeting is – to ensure that key ministries and related departments are aware of the proposed policies and measures for REDD+ discussed so far at the level of the Technical Working Group (Driver and Strategy Group), to review the proposals and contribute to better designing and supporting the proposed Policies and Measures (PaMs).
During the meeting, Dr. Thaung Naing Oo, National Programme Director of UN-REDD Programme presented the progress and plan of REDD+ Programme in Myanmar. Then the main topics on “Overview of draft REDD+ Strategy including the drivers of deforestation/forest degradation, draft objectives and targets for REDD+ 2017-2030” by UN-REDD Technical Specialist, “Draft REDD+ Strategy: Objectives, targets & prioritized PaMs, consideration for implementations” by UN-REDD Programme Coordinator and “Engangement Plan for Myanmar’s National REDD+ Strategy Development” by UN-REDD Stakeholder Engagement Officer were presented consecutively. The department officials actively discussed on the proposed PaMs for REDD+ relevant for the respective ministry, input for feasibility, focus and limitations of the proposed PaMs and other relevant considerations.
Such Ministerial Meetings have been scheduled to organize during the month of June 2017 in collaboration with other Ministries such as Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Planning and Finance, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Border Affairs respectively.
Myanmar became a partner country of the UN-REDD Programme in December 2011, and received support to develop a REDD+ Readiness Roadmap that was finalized in 2013. From 2014 onwards, the Programme provided initial support to implement the widely-consulted roadmap. In November 2015, the 15th Meeting of the UN-REDD Policy Board approved the country’s request for a National Programme, with full implementation commencing in January 2017.
