Ministerial Meeting with MoALI for National REDD+ Strategy Development

Nay Pyi Taw, 13 June 2017

UN-REDD Programme in Myanmar held Ministerial Meeting engaging with Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MoALI) in Nay Pyi Taw on 13 June to ensure that key ministries and related departments are aware of the proposed policies and measures for Draft REDD+ strategy. Permanent Secretary, Deputy Director-General and also other high level officials of the departments under the Ministry participated the meeting.

During the meeting, “Myanmar REDD+ Readiness Roadmap including its progress & plan”, “Overview on Draft REDD+ Strategy” and “Draft REDD+ strategy-objectives, targets and prioritized Policies and Measures (PaMs)” were presented to the officials by UN-REDD Myanmar representatives.

In his opening remark, Dr. Tin Htut, Permanent Secretary of MoALI said, “Nowadays, climate change impacts are huge. We have to pay attention and we have to prepare. I really want to appreciate that Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MoNREC) is coming with this REDD+ Strategy to reduce emission on deforestation and forest degradation in Myanmar which is, in fact, very important.” And he stressed the importance of the policy and strategy, “REDD+ Strategy for Myanmar should be holistic. And what policy to support? We need a clear policy. Definitely, we have Environmental policy and Land-use policy already. But the way I see is Policy and Strategy are living documents. Time to time, they have to be looked at, they have to be reviewed and they have to be valid.”
