7th Programme Executive Board Meeting of UN-REDD Programme, Myanmar

The UN-REDD Programme Management Unit arranged 7th Programme Executive Board Meeting at the Amara Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw, with tangible cooperation and support from the Forest Department. The meeting was intended for reviewing the activities and progress of the UN-REDD Programme Implementation for the 1st half year and requesting decisions from Board Members on Mid-Year Plan 2019.

 

At opening of the meeting, the Chair of the PEB, Dr. Nyi Nyi Kyaw, Director General of Forest Department gave opening speech. In his opening remark, he said, “In reviewing the documents prepared for this meeting, I am delighted to see that the Programme implementation is on track to achieve its results, and I am especially delighted that there has been significant progress on the development of a Safeguards Information System and Myanmar’s first Summary of Information, to be submitted to the UNFCCC.”

 

In her welcome remark, Ms. Xiaojie Fan, Country Representative of FAO highlighted the strong collaboration of Forest Department and three UN Agencies working together and learning from each other for better implementation of Myanmar REDD+ Programme.

 

On behalf of Chair of National REDD+ Taskforce, Dr. Thaung Naing Oo, Director of Forest Research Institute and National Programme Director of UN-REDD Myanmar reported about the activities undertaken and decisions made by the Taskforce.

 

According to meeting section 1, Dr. Thaung Naing Oo,National Programme Director of UN-REDD Myanmar discussed the topic of “State of advance UN-REDD Programme in Myanmar, development towards major targets for 2019”. And then, PEB commented on measures to rectify any shorting comings highlighted in the presentation. Daw Khin Hnin Myint, National Programme Coordinator of UN-REDD explained about the fulfillment of pending actions from the meeting minutes of 6th PEB meeting in December 2018.

 

Mr. Tim Boyle, Chief Technical Advisor from UN-REDD updated about the proposal process for a costed extension to the UN-REDD Programme Myanmar. He explained, “Norway has invited the UN-REDD/ Myanmar programme to submit a proposal for REDD+ implementation in Mangroves. And proposal has been prepared and waiting for PEB comments.”

 

Following that, Mr. Tim Boyle continued to provide updates on the implications of the COP 24 decisions from the UN-REDD Global Program and Fund Mobilization for SIS operationalization. Presentation was based on requests from the PEB to check their respective budgets and identify possible resources to make the SIS operational in 2020.

 

At the final section of the meeting, Daw Khin Hnin Myint provided detail explanation on Mid-Year Plan 2019 requesting for approval on modification to the Annual Work Plan. After that, PEB members decided tentative date and topics for next PEB meeting. Total 16 attendants were presented at 7th Programme Executive Board Meeting.
